"Truth is not what you want it to be; it is what it is,
and you must bend to its ways or live a lie."
Miyamoto Musashi.

I tend to find the theme of my December newsletters a challenging one to decide on.  Like always, I relax and allow the universe to throw me clues on what some of my readers could benefit from.  For the past fortnight, the question I keep hearing from people around me, even strangers conversing in cafe's as I walk around is, "Where did 2007 go?"  Well, it hasn't gone anywhere.  To begin with, we're still in it, so there's still time to end it on a good note; and when we do step into 2008 we're never really going to lose 2007 either.  It'll always be there in our database of experiences.  A database that we can access regularly and cherish, or perhaps learn from and grow.

The reason why most people ask the above question and struggle answering it is because they're thinking too fast and speaking even faster.  This is the fundamental problem with the 21st century; its speed.  2007 has had the same pace as any other year and all you need to do is go back and scan it slowly in order to take stock of the experiences you've had.

Okay, I really don't want to babble on and over explain things, so here's what I want you to do right now- it only takes a few precious minutes.  Grab a pen and a clean sheet of paper and go inside your mind to the start of January 2007 and slowly go through the year to this very day as you start jotting down the following:

People you met

Movies you saw

Places you ate

Things you learned

Deals you closed

Compliments you were given

New hair styles

Clothes you bought

Places you travelled

Relationships

Parties you went to

Concerts

Gifts you gave and got

You get the idea...

Many of my recent clients find the above exercise invaluable as they begin to remember and recall some amazing times.  Even if you've had some unpleasant experiences over the past year, you have the option of feeling bad about them, or honouring them by asking yourself some empowering questions: "What did they teach me?", "How have those experiences help me grow?" and "How am I stronger today than a year ago?".  Remember, awareness is the first step towards betterment because in order to change something, you first have to know what it is.  Life can have bad results that are trying to guide you and tell you what not to do, and to try something else.  The options can be many.  The more flexible you can be, the less you'll hurt and suffer.

Now that 2007 is clearer, let's give 2008 some thought.  I'm a big fan of setting goals, but I'm not going to suggest you start setting goals now.  Instead, what I would like to suggest is for you to give yourself a little promise, a promise to be more honest and true with yourself.  On some level, we all know what we want.  The two questions I urge you to consider are:  Why?  and How?  Why, because I want you to honestly acknowledge the reasons behind your wants.  If you come to the conclusion that the why has solid reasons, move on to answering the "How?".  How can you go about achieving it?  What steps can you consider? How can you plan and implement?  Give it a go...

Remember that you have the option of looking back at 2007 with bitterness and resentment, as well as the option to take on board the valuable lessons it has taught.  It can be an opportunity to adjust unnecessary habits and look forward to the constructive changes you can make for 2008.

Let me finish off by suggesting the four golden questions that can help you access the wisdom within, and gain the clarity you need for the year ahead.

*What do I need to do less of ?

*What do I need to do more of?

*What do I need to stop doing?

*What do I need to start doing?
