If you think I’m about to go and on about how to stick to your New Years resolutions you’re dead wrong.  In fact, the way to succeed and grow is not necessarily to set yourself tough, life changing resolutions that challenge you beyond your strength and abilities.

If you ask me, throw those resolutions out and get on with what you’ve already decided.  To put it bluntly, STOP slacking off and get on with it.  Resolutions are what I call cute party talk that seems to be festively expected.  Realistically, by setting up resolutions you’re digging yourself a big bad hole of potential expectation and guilt.  You could say to yourself that from the 1st of Jan, I’ll start this, from Epiphany onwards, I’ll do that or from Valentines Day onwards, I’ll start this….The dates and opportunities can be endless.

The bottom line is, stop talking and start doing.  Here’s a great quote by John LaValle that distils it all perfectly: “Wanting is not enough…doing is even better…and rather than worrying about making that big step, take the steps that are most comfortable to you, and it’s not only easier, but better for YOU!  Easy, better, more comfortable….this is great brain chemical producing language…worrying is not!”  As the old saying goes, worry kills more people than work, because people worry more than work.

If you’re still reading, it means you’re hungry and determined, but may lack the motivation to get on with it.  Okay, hear me out…human behaviour is governed by two powerful forces: pain and pleasure.  If you want to lose weight, but keep focusing on the pain of exercise and how horrible celery sticks taste, chances are, you won’t get very far.  On the other hand, if you start to visualise how sexy and healthy you’ll be when you shed a few pounds, and how losing some weight will provide less pressure on your heart, lungs and liver only to leave you feeling younger, and more agile. Then, your motivation will shift.  As I’ve mentioned many times before, imagination is far more powerful than your will.  Change what you say to yourself, and change what you imagine and you can instantly shift your motivation forward.

Finally, you can accomplish absolutely anything if you simply chunk it down into little tasks that add up in six months.  If you want to lose 10 lbs, aim for only 2 first.  Make it happen…….

Until Next Time……Live, Don’t Just Exist!
